EN: As one of the sponsors of the Silmax Cannondale MTB team (among the best Italian XC teams), I'm going to attend the presentation they will hold tomorrow evening in Diano Marina (Liguria, Italy) for media and sponsors, before their first training camp of the season. The good thing is that I'll stay in Diano Marina for the night and ride with the team on Saturday, on the same trails they'll race on Sunday.
As I was booking the hotel and organizing the trip, I realised I didn't have a bicycle I could use there. As things are right now, I'm not fit enough to ride my XC racing soft-tail up Liguria's steep climbs (I have a 1x10 drivetrain, with 32x36 as easiest gear), 29er single-speed is a no-no there... and I'd rather pedal with an anchor in my backpack than use the Rohloff bike on any climb taking longer than 20 minutes.
Last year I had disassembled the Nicolai full suspension planning to sell it... but it just didn't happen, so I decided to put it back together, using several parts I had laying in the garage.
The result isn't bad: it's kind of an enduro bike with some very light XC parts (KCNC scandium seatpost and crankset, Hope seatpost binder, Stratos XCpro rear shock, Ritchey WCS headset), a "serious" fork (2006 Marzocchi Allmountain II, travel reduced to 130mm), mixed brakes (very old Grimeca front, very old Shimano XT rear), a  SRAM X.0/X.9 transmission and reliable FSA bar/stem (not their fancy carbon stuff, solid aluminum with steel bolts).
How will it work? Infact, I'm more worried about the "engine" than about the bike...

IT: Dopo il freddo record della settimana scorsa, con neve, ghiaccio e quant'altro, ci stiamo godendo alcuni giorni sopra lo zero, con ore di sole che hanno completamente sciolto la neve.
Preferendo pedalare rispetto a spendere tempo a lavare la bicicletta (i boschi sono una palude!), ho deciso di fare un po' di chilometri su asfalto. Riscoprire le stradine tranquille del Roero, con salite a volte ripide ma mai troppo lunghe, è stato un vero piacere, così come le sensazioni offerte da un tradizionale telaio in acciaio e 'futuristiche' gomme tubeless stradali.
I vigneti che costeggiavo durante gran parte delle mie 3 ore di pedalata erano troppo belli per non scattare almeno una foto!

EN: After the record-low temperatures we had last week, with snow and ice and all, we're being blessed by some days of relatively warm temperatures and hours of full sunshine that completely melted the snow.
Preferring to ride than washing my bike (as the woods are currently a mud-bath), I decided to put on some kilometers on the asphalt. Rediscovering the quiet roads of 'Roero', with climbs that can be steep but seldom very long, was a real pleasure, as well as the comfortable ride offered by a traditional steel frame and 'future' road-tubeless tyres.
The wineyards that surronded me during most of  my 3 hour ride were too beautiful not to stop and take a picture!

IT: Questa è tipicamente la stagione del riposo per il ciclista, ho usato questa scusa per fare il pigro (sportivamente) e dedicarmi ad altro. In pratica, mi sono occupato di alcune ottime sponsorizzazioni per il 2010 (comunicazioni ufficiali a breve!), ho fatto alcune aggiunte last minute al programma promozionale, mi sono impegnato nel completare il passaggio a Ubuntu Linux, imparando nuove cose e cercando i programmi che mi permettessero si rimpiazzare ciò che usavo con Windows. Parlando di Ubuntu, sono stato colpito dalle funzioni offerte da Inkscape (grafica vettoriale) e Gimp (editor di immagini), per quanto mi riguarda sono superiori alla suite Corel X3 che usavo prima (oltre a essere gratuiti, al contrario di Corel).
L'aiuto in linea e tutti i forum mi hanno anche permesso di installare la stampante di etichette Dymo che era ancora collegata al vecchio PC (Windows)... ed il programma gLabels crea un prodotto simile a quello del software proprietario Dymo. Bello!
Dato che non sono un vero maniaco dei computer, dopo tanto tempo passato davanti ad uno schermo ho sentito il bisogno di sgranchirmi. Sabato scorso nevicava e le temperature sono scese sotto -10° qui in Piemonte... ma io dovevo pedalare, così domenica ho messo su roba pesante e mi sono avventurato nei boschi.
I biker agonisti (erano almeno in dieci) stavano facendo giri ad un buon ritmo sui sentieri più larghi, così dopo poco ho deviato verso percorsi più tecnici e stretti, al mio passo. Era bello lasciare tracce sulla neve ancora vergine e sono entrato in uno di quegli stati di grazia in cui la bicicletta si muove esattamente come vorresti, scivolando dolcemente ad ogni curva. Due ore era tutto il tempo a mia disposizione, ma non vedo l'ora di ritornare sulla neve (... più avanti il fango la sostituirà... sempre divertente, ma di certo meno bianco e soffice!)

EN: It is the off-season as far as cycling is concerned, that was the official excuse for being a lazy cyclist and do something else. I basically spent most of my time working on some nice sponsoring agreements for 2010 (stay tuned, official statemens soon!), I refined the media planning with some last-minute additions, I invested myself in perfecting the passage to Ubuntu Linux, learning new things and searching for applications that could replace what I used to have with Windows. Talking about Ubuntu, I was impressed by the features offered by Inkscape (vector graphic) and Gimp (image editor), in my experience they are superior to the Corel X3 suite I used to have (and they are free, unlike Corel).
The wiki support and all the useful forums allowed me to install the Dymo Labelwriter printer that was still connected to the old (Windows) computer... and the gLabels software creates an output similar to what I got with the proprietary Dymo software. How cool is that?
Since I'm no computer geek, some exercise was sorely needed after all that time facing a screen. It snowed last saturday, with temperatures below -10°C (14°F)... but I needed to go, and Sunday morning I put on my 'serious winter' cycling clothes and I headed to the woods.
The local die-hard mtb racers were doing laps on the wider trails (I counted around ten people as we crossed each other), so after a while I steered to the more technical, lonlier single-tracks to find my own pace. I was good to leave my trace on untrodden snow and I entered in one of those perfect moments when the bike is working right beneath you as you enjoy sliding around each corner. Two hours was all the time I had then, normally  the snow  should hold so that I can go back for more soon (... then mud will cover it all... still fun, less white and clean though!)

IT: Nell'agosto 2008 avevo deciso di installare Ubuntu Linux sui miei computer... solo per scoprire, dopo qualche giorno, che non riuscivo a farlo funzionare al 100% per le mie necessità di lavoro. Frustrato, avevo re-installato Windows XP, ripromettendomi di provarci ancora in futuro.
Il mese scorso ho dovuto affrontare alcuni aggiornamenti nel settore informatico: un nuovo contratto per una connessione ad Internet più veloce, un nuovo server ed un nuovo PC. La domanda si è quindi riproposta: quale sistema operativo? Il server, per ciò che gli viene richiesto, utilizza un ambiente virtuale (VMware) con diverse macchine virtuali all'interno, e quindi vive una vita a sè. Invece sul PC, che uso nel mio lavoro giornaliero, ho subito eliminato Windows Vista e, invece di passare a Windows 7, ho riprovato Ubuntu nella sua ultima incarnazione 9.10 (Karmic Koala).
Mi ci è voluto un po' per far funzionare tutto ed ho avuto qualche problemino... niente che non si potesse risolvere con un po' di tempo su Google o Wikipedia. Mentre pur da nuovo il PC (processore AMD Phenom X4, 4 GB RAM... non una lumaca) dava segni di lentezza con Vista, adesso con Ubuntu 9.10 (più tutti i programmi che mi servono) è di una rapidità commovente .
Ci sarà sicuramente bisogno di ulteriori adattamenti al nuovo ambiente e molte altre cose da imparare, ma io penso ne valga la pena.

EN: Back in August 2008 I decided to install Ubuntu Linux on my computers... only to discover, after a couple of days, that I couldn't find a way to make it work 100% for my office needs. Frustrated, I re-installed Windows XP, promising myself that the switch to an open source OS was just delayed.
Fast forward to the recent past: last month I had to do some investments in the IT department, including a new contract with a faster Internet provider, a new server and a new desktop PC. Which OS for the new machines? The server, supposed to do 'server stuff', lives a life on its own and runs a virtual environment (VMware) with several virtual machines inside. On the desktop PC instead, for my daily work, I decided to get rid of the pre-installed Windows Vista and, instead of going for Windows 7, I tried again with Ubuntu, in its 9.10 (Karmic Koala) incarnation.
It took me a while to make everything work and I had some minor issues... nothing that some quality Google/Wikipedia time couldn't fix. While the PC (AMD Phenom X4 processor, 4 GB RAM... not a steam engine!) was surprisingly slow with Vista and nothing installed, it's now blazing fast with Ubuntu 9.10 (and all the software I need).
There will surely be some more adaptation required and many more things to learn, but I think it's worth it.

EN: Effetto Mariposa's headquarter is in a 30.000 people town called Bra. Bra is in Piemonte (a region in the north-west of Italy), south of Torino and north of Cuneo. It finds itself between the Langhe and Roero hills, surrounded by wineyard and agricoltural excellences (..)

IT:  La sede di Effetto Mariposa è a Bra, una cittadina di circa 30.000 abitanti. Bra è in Piemonte, a sud di Torino e a nord di Cuneo, a cavallo tra le zone collinari di Langhe e Roero, terre di vigneti ed eccellenza agricola, non a caso patria di SlowFood.
Le montagne sono vicine, così come il mare (a circa 50 e 100 chilometri rispettivamente), entrambi raggiungibili in bicicletta con un minimo di allenamento.
Anche per chi pedala nelle vicinanze non mancano percorsi di tutto rispetto: i sentieri fuoristrada si imboccano già a pochi chilometri dal centro cittadino, un fitto intrico di strade sterrate su fondo argilloso che si estende dall'America dei Boschi fin verso Asti.
In bicicletta da corsa c'è l'imbarazzo della scelta, con strade non troppo trafficate  attravero paesi e paesaggi suggestivi... e pendenze per tutte le gambe.
La cucina tipica piemontese, tra pasta fatta in casa, carni, salse, dolci e leccornie di stagione, sa come ripagare sportivi (e non) per le fatiche superate.

IT: I fortissimi fratelli Rostagno, dopo i successi all'Ironbike italiano, si sono cimentati anche nell’Iron Biker Brasil, appunto in Brasile nella regione di Minas Gerais (..)

"L'evento consisteva in un prologo di circa 6 km in notturna, per le viuzze lastricate di Ouro Preto, riservato agli elite (noi per l’occasione siamo stati iscritti come elite ed abbiamo corso con i professionisti!): ci siamo classificati Luca 7°e Alessandro 8°. Proprio in questa occasione il Caffélatex ha svolto il suo compito: mentre Alessandro si scaldava e mancavano pochi minuti all’inizio, ha fatto un taglio al copertone anteriore di circa 4 mm, è uscito un po’ di liquido ma la gomma ha perso pochissima pressione e nel giro di poco il buco è stato tappato. Ha poi fatto tutto il prologo senza problemi, e anche il mattino dopo la gomma era in pressione.
Abbiamo poi corso altre 2 tappe.
La prima, con partenza ed arrivo ad Ouro Preto, consisteva in 85 km di durissimi sali-scendi nella foresta...uno sforzo a cui non siamo tanto abituati e che abbiamo pagato nel finale, terminando Alessandro 18° e Luca 20° elite.
La 2° tappa era di 55 km, con partenza ed arrivo a Mariana: qui siamo andati decisamente meglio riducendo a pochi minuti il distacco dal vincitore. Risultato finale: Alessandro 16° e Luca 19° elite"
