Carbon-fiber based composites are
surely a big step forward over traditional structural materials in
terms of specific mechanical properties, but their spread in bicycle
applications brought new questions and concerns as well. Cyclists and mechanics are now forced to deal with composites: stronger, lighter but also more brittle and with a very limited plastic deformation to failure compared with metals. This means, in other words, there's less room for mistakes. The torque 'feel' coming from years of experience with steel bolts on aluminum parts doesn't apply to carbon components, where over-tightening leads to immediate visible serious damage or, even worse, to unsuspected little cracks that weaken the part reducing its ability to stand loads (something better avoided in a components such as handlebars, seatposts, forks..). Despite all the efforts of part makers, who print recommended torque values on their products, quite often not only end-users but also professional mechanics don't have the right tool for a proper torqueing. Effetto Mariposa project has been started to fill this dangerous lack of professional bicycle-assembly tools with specific and well-engineered products. |
